The Purpose Driven Life - Intro
The Purpose Driven Life, is the newest book I am reading, and I have to say that it will probably be one of the most important books I have - or could ever read. Many of you have seen it's author Pastor Rick Warren on the Oprah Winfrey show on OWN discussing his book and the work done at the Saddleback Church.
I have to admit that there is something about the delivery of the message given by Pastor Rick through his sermons, which have touched me deeply. I recognize that his 'non-preachy' delivery is very similar in style to the way in which my dad use to Pastor when he delivered his sermons. Perhaps that may even be how I was led to Pastor Rick's teachings.
Those who know me, and those who have been following this blog know that I lost my father to cancer nearly 7 months ago, after finding him only 14months prior. And I am the first to admit that I have never regarded myself as religious - frankly, the corruption in the church and pedophile priests is deeply off putting to me. That said, I have always regarded myself as deeply spiritual. I love God. I accept Jesus as my Savior. And I know that during the brightest and also the darkest days of my life, I have never walked alone. God has been - and always will be - right here with me!
With that said, as human beings we always have questions - don't we? We want to know - why are we here? I covered this in an early blog post and to simplify that post - I bottom line it with we are here to share God's love for one another. Well - that is the simple answer. Of course it does go much deeper than that. And in Pastor Rick's book 'The Purpose Driven Life' we will find the answers to the questions of why we are here, through a 40 day Spiritual Journey.
Let me pause here - for those who are not aware of Pastor Rick, let me post his condensed bio as written within the book:
Time Magazine Says: "Rick Warren is unquestionably America's most influential and highest-profile spiritual leader."
As founding pastor of Saddleback Church, Dr. Rick Warren leads a 30,000-member congregation in California with campuses in major cities around the world. As theologian, he has lectured at Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, University of Judaism and dozens of universities and seminaries. As a global strategist he advises world leaders and has spoken tot he United Nations, US Congress, Davos Economic Forum, TED, Aspen Institute, and numerous parliaments. Rick has also founded the global P.E.A.C.E. plan, which Plants churches of reconciliation, Equips leaders, Assists the poor, Cares for the sick, and Educates the next generation in 196 countries.
My belief is that relationships always need to be tended to - or they weaken and eventually falter. This is true with human-to-human relationships and it is most definitely true for our relationship with God - as all things begin with God. Therefore we must first focus on our relationship with God and our faith in his His plan for us. With this in mind, I have signed the covenant at the beginning of the book, which reads:
With God's help, I commit the next 40 days of my life to discovering God's purpose for my life.
This is signed my myself (the reader/student) and also by Pastor Rick.
Ending with the following scripture:
"Two are better off than one, because together they can work more effectively. If one of them falls down, the other can help him up... Two people can resist an attack that would defeat one person alone. A rope made of three cords is hard to break."
- Ecclesiastes 4:9 (TEV)
The Purpose Driven Life was originally published in 1997 and contained 40 chapters/lessons. The new edition for a new generation offers 4 new features.
I have begun my daily lessons on March 6th, so today I is Day 3 for me! After today's readings I decided that I want to share the lessons and my thoughts each day with you. I will not be transcribing the actual book, because I believe that you should buy the book and experience the journey for yourself - but also, there is a little thing called copyright infringement. (lol)
But in the spirit of being 'called to bless' others, I will share the daily thought, and daily bible verse, topic of the day - as well as my personal thoughts with you. In hopes that it will inspire you to discover your purpose driven life.
In addition to recommending that you buy the book and join me on this spiritual journey, I encourage you to hear Pastor Rick's messages.
